Volunteer
Old Fort Niagara is constantly looking for people interested in helping to tell the story of this unique piece of American History. Events, programs, equipment and exhibits are all the result of hours of work, both in front of and behind the scenes.
If you aren't sure you know enough about history, don't worry. All it takes to be involved is some spare time and a willingness to learn. Our staff and volunteers provide all the training and guidance you will need. Volunteer opportunities exist in behind the scenes work like sewing and carpentry, as well as visitor programs like tour guiding and demonstrations. The list is endless.
If you want to be a costumed interpreter, but aren't sure about how you would do speaking to the public, the fort has training programs in place that will help you gradually feel more comfortable interacting with visitors.
No matter what your skills or background, there is probably a role for you in our volunteer program. While some of our volunteers enjoy wearing historic clothing, there are lots of non-costumed volunteer options. Look carefully at the volunteer form, and try to pick the categories in which you would most like to be involved. We won't make you stick to what you write now, but we would like to know how best to direct your energy and ability.
We have a minimal time commitment requirement of eight hours per year. We would like to see you at least once in a calendar year to be continued on our mailing list Whether its several hours a week or several hours a year, we can use you. And not just in the summer. We have needs all year around. We will keep you apprised of the opportunities to help through a monthly newsletter called the Garrison Orders. In it appears all of the up-coming events that need volunteer support, and many longer-term projects and programs that could use your help.
And we must mention the benefits. You would receive free admission to the fort and its programs for yourself, and discounted admission for your family and guests, as well as admission to special "members only" functions. You would also qualify for discounts on Museum shop merchandise and OFN publications, while receiving a subscription to both a volunteer and fort newsletters, that give advanced notice of special fort programs. You are also invited to all staff and volunteer functions like the annual picnic.
Last, but certainly not least, you will get the satisfaction of helping Old Fort Niagara's history come alive for our visitors for years to come!
If you think you are ready and willing to become a part of our growing volunteer family, just fill out the form and return it.
